Who We Are

Lit Initiative is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) that is focused on promoting functional literacy among young adults in Kilifi County and beyond.

We are passionate about making sure that every young adult can effectively interact with the information and the world around them.

To us, functional literacy is five key things:

  • Basic literacy: that every young adult can read, write & do basic Mathematics.
  • Financial literacy: that every young adult knows how to handle money (including budgeting and saving).
  • Civic literacy: that every young adult knows their responsibilities and rights, and that they have the knowledge and skills of how to engage with government and the community around them.
  • Life skills: that every young adult has the mindset and skills needed to take them through their daily lives.
  • Digital literacy: that every young adult has the ability to find, gauge, and easily communicate information through typing and on other media platforms.

What We Do

We create awareness and encourage young adults in Kilifi County to appreciate the value of learning through our functional literacy programs.

Our work brings these young adults who have been left behind to join the table. By helping them know how to read & write, speak English and Swahili fluently, do basic Math, use digital devices, manage monies wisely, become active citizens and instill in them life skills, they gain the power to express themselves and interact more effectively with the environment around them.

More importantly, we transform their lives by providing them with knowledge, skills, mentorship and even job opportunities so that they acquire the knowledge and attitude they need to lead improved lives.

Why We Do It

There are many young people in Kilifi County (and most of the Kenyan coast) who are marginalised because they didn’t have the chance to complete school or further their education. This has had many effects – including widening the inequality gap, reducing their participation in governance and making their lives less fulfilling.

Our niche is to solely illuminate the lives of those young adults to whom basic and quality education is a far-fetched dream.

We want every young adult in Kenya to be lit!

    Lit Learner

I did not have the opportunity to finish school. Through Lit Initiative, I am now able to speak in English. I got an ID Card and a KRA PIN. I also now have a savings account. I have travelled to Mombasa and visited Fort Jesus, crossed the ferry and gone to shop in a supermarket for the first time. I am lit!

      Lit Learner

Before I joined Lit Initiative as a learner, I used to do random manual jobs near my home area. After the Functional Literacy program and the internship at Lit, I was employed by the company and now I am able to fend for myself and my family.

My experience at Lit Initiative has exposed me to a different world of people who care about my mental health. I have gained Life Skills and have travelled abroad through the Initiative’s program.

          Non-Profit Organization

Over the course of eight weeks, Lit Initiative, supported by The Open Institute, educated 18 students on the functional literacy subsets of literacy and numeracy, financial literacy, civic literacy, digital literacy and life skills. At the point of graduation on the 7th of May, 2022, 12 students successfully finished the programme. This translates to 67% of the initial group, a success rate that is commendable considering first that this was the first activity of its kind and second that most of the participants who did not finish the programme left because of matters beyond our control. The students, composed entirely of youths who had finished their secondary school education but who had not had the chance to further their education benefited greatly from the discourse.

When I first joined Lit, I was all shy and could not express myself. I did not get to complete my studies given the community culture that I grew up in and its disregard for the girl child in education. Most girls get married quite an early age and I boldly chose not to take that part. Through Lit, I have been able to learn about computers and mobile phones. I have a bank account that is active and my social life has improved. am now an active citizen. I would like to reach out to similar young girls who were in my situation and empower them with the knowledge that I have gained at no cost. This is my way of giving back to the community.
